Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup

Highway Cleanup

Our UUP chapter at Upstate has "adopted" a one mile section of Rt 481 just south of Syracuse to keep clean, and we have a written agreement with NY State Dept. of Transportation to pick up litter four times a year on both sides of the highway.

If you can help, please send an email to David Peckham so we can get an approximate number for coffee and donuts. (Please "subject" the email "481 Cleanup"). Please provide a home and/or cell phone no. so that we can reach you in case we decide to cancel at the last minute because of weather.

We have been provided with hard hats (optional wear), reflective vests, trash bags, and wooden "pickeruppers". Please wear long pants and shirts/jackets with long sleeves, and comfortable shoes. Do bring gloves

If you would like to have children help, please, no one under the age of 12 as this is a 65 mph road. We do not cross the highway nor do we clean the center median. We always finish prior to noon, and always have a good time. It is a great little morning of exercise. Hope you can help. If not this time, send an email, and we will make sure you know about the next time.

The Rock Cut Road trash plant can be reached from East Brighton Avenue. It runs parallel with Rte. 481 just before 481 intersects with Rte. 81. Use mapquest.com and enter "Rock Cut Road, Syracuse, NY" for a visual map.

Thanks for your support.
